About the Project
Researched by members of the Westbury branch of the Wiltshire Family History Society, the "Westbury and Area at War: 1914-18" project is an investigation regarding the men and women from Westbury, Westbury Leigh, Dilton Marsh and area (including Edington, Tinhead, Coulston and Imber) who served their country during the First World War. This is an ongoing project, with the research being added to this website.
While identifying the men and women who served from the different communities, we have sought to break down the information into three groups: those who were born in the area, and went to war from here; those not born in the area, but went to war from here; and those who were born here but had moved away when they joined up. We seek to learn about their lives here at home, rather than the theatres of war in which they fought.
Our grateful thanks to all those who have contributed to the research and/or who have offered material to be used as part of it.
The Westbury Family History Group meets every 4th Thursday of the month at 7.15pm in the foyer of the Westbury's Methodist Church. The branch has regular interesting and informative talks and discussions by members and guest speakers on all aspects of family history and general history [please see link on relevant page to find forthcoming programme].
